Smartphones Top Feature Phones for First Time
The sale of smartphones has now exceeded that of feature phones. Research company IDC recently revealed that 51.6% of the 418.6 million units shipped in January-March 2013 were smartphones.
This figure represents an incredible 42% increase in the sale of smartphones to 216 million as compared to the same time period in 2012. Samsung top the list of manufacturers, their 32.7% share in the smartphone market being a significant driving force in the increase of sales. Competitors Apple took just over half of this figure, supplying 17.3% of the total amount of smartphones sold but placing ahead of nearest rivals LG.
Kevin Restivo, a senior research analyst at IDC, said, "Phone users want computers in their pockets. The days where phones are used primarily to make phone calls and send text messages are quickly fading away".
